3470.13 – Clairbouyant

The Clairbuoyant is a fishing boat. It sails 40 miles east, then 80 miles south, then 20 miles east again. How far is it from its starting point?

Solution

The voyage of the Clairbuoyant is depicted in part (a) of the figure. From this we extract the right triangle in part (b). By the Pythagorean theorem, x=100x = 100.
