2761.12 – Collinear Vertices of Squares

If the three vertices AA, BB, and CC in the three adjacent squares shown below are collinear, find the value of xx. (The drawing is not to scale.)

Solution

If AA, BB, and CC are co-linear, then the slope of BCBC equals the slope of ABAB.

In other words, 34=y7\dfrac{3}{4} = \dfrac{y}{7}, so that y=214=5.25y = \dfrac{21}{4} = 5.25 and x=7+y=7+5.25=12.25x = 7 + y = 7 + 5.25 = 12.25.
