2290.11 – The Dutch Miller

A Dutch Miller, name of Tontin van Leeuwen, grinds people's grain and keeps 110\dfrac{1}{10} of what he grinds as his fee. How many kilos of grain must farmer Henk de Bruijn take to Jos so that he will come home with exactly 100 kilos of grain (which by then will be flour)?

Solution

Henk takes xx kilos and wants to have 100 kilos to take home. If Tontin takes 110\dfrac{1}{10} of the load, Henk keeps 910\dfrac{9}{10}.

So 0.9x=100,x=1000.9=111.10.9x = 100, x = \dfrac{100}{0.9} = 111.1\ldots kilos. He'll probably bring somewhat over 111 kilos and have a little extra at the end.
