The school system conducted a massive survey of ice cream preferences. Of 700 students interviewed, 415 said they liked chocolate ice cream, 269 said they liked strawberry, and 123 said they liked both flavors. How many didn't like either?
Solution
A diagram, like the one below in which all the given data is collected, might help. The 415 who like chocolate include the 123 who like both, so 292 like chocolate only. In the same way, 146 like strawberry only. Thus like one of the flavors and like neither.
